Shifted working days — important in Hungary

Each year the Hungarian government moves certain working days to create longer breaks. A weekday next to a public holiday becomes a rest day, and a Saturday becomes a working day in exchange. These shifted rest days are paid days off, but they are not public holidays.

In 2026:

Rest day granted

Working Saturday in exchange

Friday 2 January

Saturday 10 January

Friday 21 August

Saturday 8 August

Thursday 24 December

Saturday 12 December

Is 24 December a public holiday?

No. Christmas Eve is not a statutory public holiday in Hungary. In 2026 it is a shifted rest day, granted in exchange for working Saturday 12 December.

A bill to make 24 December a permanent public holiday was submitted to Parliament in September 2026 and has not been passed. We will update this article if that changes.

Public holidays falling at the weekend

Hungarian law does not grant a substitute day off when a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In 2026 this affects 15 March, 1 November and 26 December.

How this affects your leave balance

Public holidays and shifted rest days are not deducted from your annual leave. If a public holiday falls inside a period of approved leave, it is not counted against your balance.
