Substitute days in 2026
Where a festival falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is designated as the general holiday instead. In 2026 this affects three dates:
Ching Ming Festival falls on a Sunday, so Monday 6 April is the holiday.
Birthday of the Buddha falls on a Sunday, so Monday 25 May is the holiday.
Chung Yeung Festival falls on a Sunday, so Monday 19 October is the holiday.
General holidays vs statutory holidays
Hong Kong distinguishes between general holidays (the 17 listed above, sometimes called bank holidays) and statutory holidays under the Employment Ordinance. The two lists have been converging, and Easter Monday becomes a statutory holiday for the first time in 2026.
Remote People employees in Hong Kong follow the general holiday calendar above.
Planning around Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year runs 17–19 February 2026. Expect limited availability across that period and in the days either side.
How this affects your leave balance
Public holidays are not deducted from your annual leave balance. If a holiday falls inside a period of approved leave, it is not counted against your balance.
