As an employer or account administrator on Remote People, you can easily request updates to the terms of an active contractor engagement directly from the platform. Depending on the type of change, a new Independent Contractor Agreement may be generated automatically for instant signature.
1. Where to Submit an Amendment Request
Go to the People tab and select the contractor record.
Click the Actions button in the top-right corner.
Select Amend Agreement.
2. Choosing What’s Changing
In the request modal, you will select from three amendment types:
Amendment Type | What It Covers | Automated? |
Payment - Fees
| Adjustments to the contractor's payment rate (using their existing rate type). | Yes — Automated generation |
Project Term - Duration
| Extending the contract end date. | Yes — Automated generation |
Other
| Rate-type conversions, scope-of-services changes, currency updates, or custom free-text requests. | No — Requires manual review by our team (up to 2 business days) |
Selection Rules & Requirements
Combined Requests: You can select Payment - Fees and Project Term - Duration together in a single request. This generates one combined agreement containing clauses for both updates.
"Other" Exclusion: Selecting Other is mutually exclusive. Choosing "Other" will clear any rate or term selections.
Fallback to Manual: If a combined request contains any element that is not eligible for automatic generation, the entire request will fall through to our internal team for manual drafting.
3. Entering Amendment Details
Payment - Fees
Current Rate: Displays your contractor's existing rate and unit for context (read-only).
New Rate: Enter the new numeric rate. The currency and rate type remain fixed to the current agreement terms.
Effective From: Defaults to the 1st of the next month. Earlier dates cannot be selected.
Project Term - Duration
Current End Date: Displays the existing contract end date (read-only).
New End Date: Must be set strictly after the current end date. The renewed agreement term automatically starts the day after the old one expires.
Other
Description: Free-text box to describe what is changing and why.
Effective From: Defaults to the 1st of the next month.
4. Review, Submit, and Validation Guards
Automated Requests: You will see a document preview of the newly generated agreement on a Confirm Agreement Amendment screen. Review the document and click to confirm and submit.
"Other" Requests: You will see a summary of your input. Because custom terms require manual drafting, no document preview is generated, and the request is sent to our Onboarding team (processing takes up to 3 business days).
Validation Rules
When previewing an automated agreement, the platform checks local compliance rules:
Discontinued Payment Rate Types: If local country rules no longer allow your contractor's legacy payment rate type (for example, hourly rates in certain jurisdictions), automated generation is blocked. You will be prompted to submit your request under Other to specify a compliant rate type, which our team will process manually.
Maximum Contract Length: New end dates must comply with local statutory maximum contract lengths.
Active Amendments in Flight: A contractor can only have one open amendment request at a time. Subsequent requests are blocked until the current pending request is fully completed or archived.
5. Signature and Execution
Unlike employee salary increase letters, contractor amendments are bilateral agreements. An amendment is not effective on client submission or contractor signature alone; it requires full execution by both parties:
Contractor Signature: The generated agreement is sent directly to the contractor to review and sign.
Company Countersignature: Once signed by the contractor, the document routes to Remote People’s authorized company signer.
Completion: Upon countersignature, the request status moves to Completed.
Important: Updated rates or contract end dates kick in on the designated effective date only after both signatures have been collected. The fully executed agreement is automatically saved to the contractor’s Documents section, and a notification is sent to the contractor with the client admin in CC.
