How is Annual Leave regulated in Hungary?

73000644889

Annual leave in Hungary is regulated by labor laws to ensure employees have adequate rest and personal time. The number of annual leave days an employee receives is based on their age.

In the platform, this leave type is called Vacation.

When booking time off, select Vacation — that is your annual leave entitlement.

Minimum Annual Leave Entitlement

The minimum number of annual leave days depends on the employee's age:

  • 20 days: For employees up to 24 years old.

  • 21 days: Ages 25 to 27.

  • 22 days: Ages 28 to 30.

  • 23 days: Ages 31 to 32.

  • 24 days: Ages 33 to 34.

  • 25 days: Ages 35 to 36.

  • 26 days: Ages 37 to 38.

  • 27 days: Ages 39 to 40.

  • 28 days: Ages 41 to 42.

  • 29 days: Ages 43 to 44.

  • 30 days: For employees aged 45 and older.

Vacation is paid by your employer.

Accrual and Pro-Rated Leave

  • In the first year of employment, annual leave is pro-rated based on the time worked.

  • From the second year onwards, employees are entitled to the full number of leave days based on their age.

Carrying Over Unused Leave

The Hungary leave year runs 1 January to 31 December, and Vacation balances reset on 1 January.

Hungarian law expects annual leave to be taken in the year it falls due. Under Remote People's Hungary policy, up to 5 unused days may be carried into the next leave year. This is our standard policy setting — it is not a statutory maximum, and your employment contract or your employer's own policy may be more restrictive.

Carried-over days remain available for 12 months and then expire. Any unused leave above the 5-day carryover allowance is lost at year end.

Requesting Vacation

  • Vacation can be requested in half days.

  • No supporting document is required.
