In Australia, employees are entitled to several types of leave beyond the standard sick and annual leave. Each heading below gives the name you will see when booking time off in the platform, and shows who pays.
Bereavement Leave (compassionate leave): Employees are entitled to 2 days of paid leave for the death or serious illness of a close relative or someone in their household. Paid by your employer.
Civic & Public Duty Leave (jury duty and community service): Employees are entitled to paid leave for the duration of jury service, with employers covering the first 10 days and variations by state or territory. The same policy covers emergency management and other community service activities. Paid by your employer.
Family and Domestic Violence Leave: Employees experiencing family or domestic violence can access 10 days of paid leave per year. Paid by your employer. An additional 5 days of unpaid leave may also be available — this is not held as a separate platform policy, so contact your Remote People HR contact if you need it.
Parental leave (Parental Leave Pay): Available for 24 weeks, with the first 8 weeks requiring continuous leave. This is paid by social security through Services Australia. Additional employer-funded leave may also be offered.
Unpaid Parental Leave: Employees can take 12 months of unpaid leave (52 weeks) after the birth or adoption of a child, with the option to request an additional 12 months. Unpaid. Supporting documentation is required.
Unpaid Leave: General unpaid leave is available by agreement, recorded with no fixed annual balance. Unpaid.
Arranged outside the platform — Long Service Leave: After several years of service with the same employer (usually 7 to 10 years), employees are entitled to long service leave, with specific entitlements varying by state or territory. There is currently no policy for this in the platform — arrange it with your Remote People HR contact.
Annual leave (Vacation) and Sick Leave are covered in separate articles. These leave entitlements provide support for employees in times of need, balancing work and personal responsibilities.
