How are CPF contributions and statutory bonuses calculated in Singapore?

Understanding CPF (Central Provident Fund) contributions and statutory bonuses is essential for accurate salary calculations in Singapore. This article provides an overview of the key rules and calculations involved.

Overview of CPF Contributions

CPF contributions are mandatory for eligible employees and employers in Singapore. Contributions are calculated based on the employee’s total wages, which include:

  • Ordinary Wages (OW): Regular monthly salary components.

  • Additional Wages (AW): Bonuses, commissions, and certain allowances.

Both OW and AW are subject to specific ceilings and contribution rates. Foreign employees (expats) are generally exempt from CPF contributions.

Ordinary Wages (OW) and Additional Wages (AW) Definitions

  • Ordinary Wages (OW): These are capped by a monthly ceiling (e.g., SGD 7,400 for a specific year). Contributions are calculated up to this ceiling.

  • Additional Wages (AW): These include bonuses and other non-recurring payments. AW is subject to an annual ceiling, calculated as SGD 102,000 minus 12 times the OW.

Calculation Rules and Ceilings

CPF contributions are computed separately for OW and AW:

  1. Apply the employer and employee contribution rates (e.g., 17% and 20%, respectively) to OW up to the monthly ceiling.

  2. Apply the same rates to AW amounts, subject to the annual AW ceiling.

For example:

  • Employer CPF on OW = SGD 7,400 × 17%.

  • Employer CPF on AW = AW amount × 17% (up to the AW ceiling).

  • Total employer CPF = Sum of OW and AW CPF components.

Employer and Employee Contribution Rates

The typical CPF contribution rates are:

  • Employee Rate: 20% of total wages.

  • Employer Rate: 17% of total wages.

These rates are applied separately to OW and AW, up to their respective ceilings. Rates may vary based on the employee’s age group and the applicable year. Refer to the official CPF schedule for precise figures.

Statutory Bonus Increments

Certain bonuses, such as Easter and Christmas bonuses, include a mandatory 4.166% increment. This is derived as follows:

  • Christmas Bonus: For every 19 calendar days of employment, employees are entitled to 2/25 of their monthly salary, resulting in a total slightly above one monthly salary by 4.166%.

  • Easter Bonus: For every 8 days, employees receive 1/15 of half their monthly salary, equating to an additional 4.166% on top of the half-salary base.

Examples of CPF Calculations

To illustrate:

  • If an employee earns SGD 8,000 in OW, only SGD 7,400 is subject to CPF contributions due to the OW ceiling.

  • If the employee receives a bonus of SGD 10,000, CPF contributions apply to this AW amount, subject to the annual AW ceiling.
