What are sick leave entitlements and processes like in Ireland?

73000639710

Ireland provides statutory entitlements for employees who are unable to work due to illness, ensuring they have the necessary time to recover. Here's what you need to know about sick leave in Ireland.

Medical Certificate Requirement

  • When required: Employees are generally required to provide a medical certificate if they are absent for more than 2 consecutive days due to illness.

  • In the platform, a supporting document is required with every sick leave request, regardless of absence length.

Statutory Sick Pay

Ireland operates a Statutory Sick Pay scheme for employees with more than 13 weeks' service.

  • Statutory sick pay is paid by your employer at 70% of your salary, capped at EUR 110 per day.

  • For longer absences you may also be eligible for Illness Benefit, paid by social security through the Department of Social Protection.

The number of statutory sick pay days is set by legislation and has been subject to phased increases. For the figure currently applying to you, contact your Remote People HR contact.

In the platform

  • Sick leave is configured with no fixed annual balance, so your statutory sick pay day count is not shown as a running balance. Each absence is recorded individually.

  • Sick leave is recorded in half-day units, so a partial day of absence can be logged accurately.

  • Requests can be submitted retrospectively. The supporting document is what makes the absence payable.

This system ensures that employees have financial support during their recovery period while balancing the costs for employers. For more detailed information or assistance, consult your Remote People HR contact or the Department of Social Protection.
