How Annual Leave Carry Over Works
If your country of employment supports annual leave carry over, any unused annual leave days from the previous year will be automatically carried over to the new leave cycle. There is no action required from you, the platform handles this process on your behalf.
At the start of each new leave cycle (typically 1 January), the platform will automatically move any unused annual leave balance from the previous year into a Carry Over balance for the current year.
Key things to know:
Carry Over is automatic. You do not need to submit a request or select how many days to carry over. This is handled by the Remote People platform if carry over is enabled for your country of employment.
Carry Over days expire. Your carried-over days are only available for a limited period in the new leave cycle; typically the first 3 months (e.g. until 31 March). After this date, any unused carry over days will expire.
Carry Over days are used first. When you apply for annual leave in the new year, the platform will automatically draw from your Carry Over balance first, before using your standard annual leave entitlement, as long as the carry over days have not yet expired.
Expired days remain visible. Even after your carry over days have expired, you will still be able to see them in your leave balance view. However, they can no longer be used.
Previous year leave cannot be applied. Once the new leave cycle begins, you will not be able to apply or import leave for the previous year.
Example
Suppose you had 5 unused annual leave days at the end of 2025. On 1 January 2026:
Those 5 days are automatically moved to your 2026 Carry Over balance.
The carry over days are available to use until 31 March 2026.
When you book annual leave before 31 March 2026, the platform will use your 5 carry over days first.
After 31 March 2026, those 5 carry over days expire and your standard 2026 annual leave balance will be used instead.
The expired carry over days will still appear in your balance view for reference.
