Occupational Health & Safety (H&S) in the Netherlands

Remote People provides Occupational Health & Safety (H&S) services in the Netherlands through our local provider, BrinQer B.V.. This service is a legal requirement under Dutch law and is not optional for employers.

What Is the H&S (Arbodienst) Service?

The H&S service, known locally as Arbodienst, is mandated by the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet, Article 14). It ensures that employers meet their legal obligations regarding workplace health and safety. This is not a health insurance plan and does not appear on employee payslips.

Key Features of the Service

  • Risk assessments and workplace safety evaluations

  • Access to certified occupational health physicians, especially during employee illness

  • Support for reintegration after long-term sickness, including a dedicated case manager

  • Confidential consultations for employees with a company doctor

Registration and Offboarding

  • Employees are automatically enrolled on BrinQer's online platform upon onboarding

  • They are deregistered during offboarding

  • The service is billed per active employee per month and is considered within the employer burden.

Sick Leave: Payroll Obligations & Insurance Coverage

When an employee goes on sick leave, Dutch law requires the employer to continue paying at least 70% of the employee's salary for up to two years. The employee is also protected from dismissal during this entire period. To mitigate this financial risk, Remote People provides a payroll insurance policy that covers the employer's salary continuation costs during an employee's sick leave. This insurance is separate from the Arbodienst service and covers the payroll burden directly. The Sick Leave Insurance is provided at a rate of just 0.72% of gross salary, offering valuable financial protection and greater cost predictability for employers operating in the Netherlands. The insurance premium will be reflected as a separate line item on the employer's monthly payroll report.
